  • Loading and unloading at each end of the trip
  • Goods held in terminals during the transit
  • Cross-border shipments between Canada and the U.S.

Carrier liability

A carrier's legal liability for lost goods is usually capped, often at an amount per kilogram. Cargo insurance covers the gap to full value.

CMR

The international convention that governs carrier liability for road freight in Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia.

Motor truck cargo

Cover bought by carriers for the goods they haul, protecting their liability to shippers.

Usually not covered

  • Unattended vehicles that are not locked or secured as required
  • Poor packing or loading by the shipper
  • Mechanical breakdown of refrigeration, unless added
  • Delay and loss of market
